In the Southern Adriatic System, port traffic takes off, even beating pre-pandemia records
Overview

Based on the statistical data collected by AdSPMAM (Port System Authority of the Southern Adriatic Sea), partner of LASTING project, the ports of the southern Adriatic recorded, in the first quarter of 2023, a +33% compared to their best performances.

Overall, over 1,000 ships arrived in the six ports of the System, a figure that translates into almost 22% more than in the same period of 2022 and almost 5 million tons of goods were handled, for a +6.5 %, compared to the previous year. A figure that strengthens the function of the System as a strategic multimodal hub and commercial infrastructure in the Mediterranean.

The flow of travelers increases exponentially. From 1 January to 31 March, in fact, over 216,000 passengers were registered, including ferries and cruises. Presences that inevitably produce economic repercussions for all the territories involved.

With more than 212,000 passengers, the ferries handled 27% more than in the same period last year.

But it is the curve of the cruise sector that marks extraordinary peaks: + 660%, a three-digit growth level that leads the System to further consolidate its role as gateway to Southern Europe.

The statistical data relating to traffic in the AdSPMAM ports are collected and processed by the GAIA technological system, the multi-port Port Community System created as a support tool for the port activities of the ports of Bari, Brindisi, Manfredonia, Barletta, Monopoli and Termoli capable of monitoring passengers and vehicles entering and leaving ports in real time, storing passenger and cargo traffic data provided by the Shipping Agencies and, therefore, processing them for statistical and billing purposes, according to the ESPO models.

For further information on the statistics relating to the individual ports, it is possible to consult the website of the Port System Authority of the Southern Adriatic Sea.
