The analyzes conducted as part of the LASTING project make it possible to identify synergies and innovations in the management of logistics systems and in particular port systems. For example, it is relevant to highlight that the president of the Port System Authority of the Southern Adriatic Sea (AdSPMAM), Ugo Patroni Griffi, and the president and managing director of Sogesid spa, Carmelo Gallo, have signed an agreement for specialist technical support functional to the implementation of the electrification of the docks of the port of Termoli.

On the basis of the agreement, Sogesid, an "in house" company of the Ministries of the Environment and Infrastructure, will provide support to the Port Authority in the drafting of the Planning Guidelines Documents (DIP) and of the technical-economic feasibility project; moreover, the Sogesid staff will take care of the supervision of the works, the coordination of safety during the execution phase and the static and/or technical-administrative testing for the electrification of the docks (cold ironing) in the port of Termoli.

Cold ironing, also known as "shore power", consists of supplying electricity to ships while they are moored in ports, allowing them to turn off their diesel engines and therefore reduce emissions of harmful gases, such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur dioxide (SO2).

This cutting-edge technology was developed as a response to growing environmental concerns and stricter emissions regulations. In fact, with cold ironing, ships can connect directly to a power source on land through electric cables, exploiting electricity from renewable sources or other low-emission sources. This significantly reduces the environmental impact of moored ships, improving air quality and public health in port areas.

AdSPMAM had presented the project for PNNR tenders. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport had admitted the work to financing, assigning the Molise airport 6 million euros financed with funds from the National Plan for complementary investments to supplement the national PNRR funds.

“The adoption of cold ironing in the ports of our System represents an ambitious and decisive turning point in tackling the problem of pollution caused by moored ships - comments the president of AdSPMAM Ugo Patroni Griffi. It is a concrete solution to reduce harmful emissions and improve air quality in port areas that will bring tangible benefits for the environment and for the health of local communities. We are laying the foundations so that in the near future also the connections with the Tremiti Islands can be zero impact - concludes Patroni Griffi - the batteries of the ferries can, in fact, be recharged directly on the quay. An enormous advantage also for the shipping companies which will significantly reduce fuel-related costs”.

On the basis of the agreement, which has a duration of three years, Sogesid will deliver the design to AdSPMAM by 30 June. The tender, which is the responsibility of the Port Authority, will be published as early as the end of September.
